Junipero Serra High School has announced that Austin Jackson ‘01 has been named Interim Dean of Students. Serra has played an integral role in Jackson’s formative and professional years, and in return, his giftedness has been experienced by Cavalier students, faculty and families on a daily basis. Jackson is an alumnus, Social Science, Physical Education and Health Teacher as well as an Assistant Athletic Director and Assistant Football Coach.
Students’ educational experience and spiritual development comes first at Serra, and few know the benefits of this experience better than Jackson.
Principal Jeff Guzman said, “With much prayer, reflection, and discernment, I am pleased and proud to announce Mr. Austin Jackson as Junipero Serra’s Interim Dean of Students for the 2017 spring semester. Mr. Jackson has been living the Cavalier Code as a Serra man since 1997, his freshman year. Junipero Serra High School has been an integral part of his formation and faith journey. I am excited for his new journey as Interim Dean of Students—forming and shaping Serra women and men...”
This new role will be a natural transition for Jackson. After graduating from Serra, Jackson earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration and a Master of Arts in Negotiation, Conflict Resolution and Peace Building from California State University, Dominguez Hills. Jackson is currently completing an additional Master’s program at Mt. Saints Mary’s University.
Jackson reflected, "I am looking forward to continue serving our students and families. Dean Hurt made a big impact on my life, as well as on thousands of my fellow Cavaliers. He was a unique and special man. I love being a part of the Serra Family, and to have this opportunity is an honor and a blessing."
Serra’s former Dean of Students, Dwan Hurt ‘81, passed away unexpectedly during Thanksgiving. Jackson will relinquish his roles of Assistant Athletic Director and Assistant Football Coach to focus on his new position.
