Junipero Serra High School Celebrates Students, Academic Honors at On-Campus Event

Junipero Serra High School dedicated an on-campus event to celebrate 134 students that achieved Principal Honor Roll or Honor Roll academic distinction. Based on Spring 2015 figures, an impressive one-third of Cavaliers were recognized for high academic performance.
 
As a college preparatory institution, Serra prides itself on equipping its students with the tools necessary to succeed at America’s leading collegiate academic environments.
 
Principal Jeff Guzman loves these types of events. He said, “The academic curriculum here at Serra challenges even the most talented students. We lift up and celebrate our students’ successes as much as possible. It is a blessing.”
 
Serra’s top students in each grade level in regards to grade point average (GPA) all achieved a 4.4 or higher in the 2014-15 academic school year:
  • Senior Ian “Tommy” Bothwell: 4.778 GPA
  • Junior Kayla Jenkins: 4.640 GPA
  • Sophomore Jordy Araya: 4.400 GPA
Current freshman Maceo Della Catena posted the highest high school placement test (HSPT) score of a 10.3.
 
Nadi Wissa serves as Serra’s assistant principal, oversees faculty and is responsible for the school’s academic climate. He is excited about Serra’s commitment and direction. “We are very happy where we are as an institution, but are always looking to the future and being on the forefront of providing top academic rigor,” commented Wissa.
 
Serra offers its students a unique opportunity to begin progress on a college degree. In partnership with local colleges, Cavaliers have the unique opportunity during high school to complete one year of college credit courses. Wissa also credits Serra’s growing number of Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors courses, its Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program featuring the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) curriculum, as well as the leadership displayed by Director of Academic Counseling, Vivian Bertrand, for contributing to the academic culture on campus.
