Gardena, CA, August 26, 2014: Archbishop Jose Gomez came to Serra on Tuesday to celebrate the Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit. Traditionally at the first mass of the school year, the pries gives blessings to the Life Team and ASB leadership team, so this year’s blessings were somewhat special. “Not to take away from the other priests we have at mass, but to have the Archbishop give you a blessing at the start of the school year…wow!” joked ASB President Najla Phillips.
As someone who is prone to humor himself, Archbishop Gomez teased the students about the championship banners on the wall. “I see only one State Championship in 2013? C’mon, guys. It’s OK…I’ll pray for your teams.” He stressed a life given to loving and helping others, and later talked about the priorities of high school life. “Games are won, games are lost, but in the end they are not important. What is important is how you show love for one another.”
