Los Angeles, CA, February 8, 2014: Nearly 40 aspiring musicians, conductors, and music producers from Serra High School attended a morning performance by the LA Philharmonic on Friday as part of the Symphonies for Schools program. The performance, through a modern sketch involving teenagers fretting about prom, brought to life the works of Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky. Serra students laughed and sat in rapt attention as members of the LA Philharmonic wove in various pieces from Tchaikovsky’s symphonies.
Taharka Bunting, a senior, was all smiles when the lights came up. “I want to come back again. This place is amazing, and the acoustics are perfect.” When asked about the performance, Sean May, a freshman, was keen to notice the connection between Tchaikovsky and modern music. “Symphonies are more developed than most of the songs we listen to today, but the themes of love and conflict are still there. You can hear it in the different instruments.”
Chris Adachi, Serra’s Band Director, attended a professional development workshop so that his students could be eligible to attend the annual event. “This is important to keep going, and I’d like to take our kids here every year. It’s free, and you can’t beat the experience of watching a professional symphony. Plus, I bet they’re pretty stoked to be out of school on a Friday.”
