Fourth and 31 from your own 22?
No problem. At least not for Serra junior Adoree' Jackson.
Jackson called his own fake punt - much like he did in the CIF Southern Section Western Division final against Chaminade.
He blazed past several Oakdale defenders and high-stepped into the end zone for a dazzling 78-yard scoring run to put the capper on the CIF State Division II Bowl.
"That was crazy," Jackson said.
That was the beauty of Jackson, who made everything he did on the field spectacular, from the mundane to the dazzling.
Jackson was operating at a different level in helping propel Serra to the CIF Western crown and the CIF State Division II title en route to earning the 2012 Daily Breeze Player of the Year award.
"I wanted to put myself on a different level and show that I am one of the top contenders in the 2014 class," Jackson said. "My mindset was to do better every day. I wanted to stay focused and stay humble."
Jackson had five interceptions, but his offensive role expanded after an injury to star Anterio Bateman.
Jackson finished with 33 catches for 546 yards and five touchdowns and added seven carries for 175 yards and five touchdowns.
But it was his ability to break a game-changing play at any moment.
He had a 43-yard fake punt that ignited Serra in a 30-28 win over Chamiande in the Western Division final. Jackson caught a pass in the middle of the field and then somersaulted over a defender into the end zone for a 27-yard touchdown in the Division II state final against Oakdale. Then there was the audacious 4th-and-31 fake punt against Oakdale. "You see that stuff on video games," Jackson said. And at Serra football games.
